Today’s Good News: Monsanto Kicked Out Of Venezuela
From the Organic Consumers Association comes word that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias has cancelled a deal with Monsanto to plant up to 500,000 acres with GMO soybeans. This may be the most sweeping restriction on transgenic crops in the western hemisphere.
Before a recent international gathering of supporters in Caracas, Chavez said that GM crops are contrary to the interests and needs of the nation’s farmers and farmworkers.
“I ordered an end to the project,” said Chavez, upon learning that GM crops were involved in the Monsanto deal. “This project is terminated.” No further details were available.
