Today’s Good News: Sicko!

I made the pilgrimage to my local theater for the opening of Michael Moore’s new film, Sicko. I hope - and believe - that this film may mark a turning point in the health care conversation.Moore indicts our health care system not by focusing - as most do - on the uninsured, but on those “living the American dream” WITH health insurance. He brings it all down to one former insurance company worker who states that she was bonused for DENYING claims. We all know it, but there it is in black and white: Insurance companies are in the business of DENYING coverage - not providing it. As for-profit entities, what else could they be doing? It costs money to approve an expense, saves money to deny it. That’s why private health care doesn’t work and we need government-funded universal health care NOW. All the rest of the movie - and it’s all wonderful, even with laughs - is gravy.

By the way, said insurance company worker said they were expected to deny at least 10% of claims. And if you want that bonus… In the movie we’re treated to stories of both children and adults who died as a result of this system. Murdered by the health care industry.

Oh, and I can’t resist telling you that Hillary Clinton’s campaign begged Moore to delete the part where he mentions that she’s the leading candidate in contributions from the health care industry. It’s still there.
