Today’s Good News: Northland Poster Collective Lives To Fight Another Day

A little while back, I received a message that the Northland Poster Collective, of Minneapolis, was in danger of going out of business. I dug deep to find a little money to send, passed the word to friends, and hoped for the best. Thankfully, other people got that political art is important - and nobody does it better - and rallied to save the day.

NPC reports that the response “helped us secure $200,000 worth of financing so that we can retire our old debts and meet payroll! And we’ll have capitalization left over to expand our outreach and introduce new product lines, too.”

“Back in May, we did not start out to ask for help staying open. In fact, we sent out a notice that we had decided to close. The protests we received (and our friends know how to protest!) caused us to think again. We sent out a second letter, explaining one of the generous offers which came almost immediately: a matching grant. Many people gave a little. Fewer people gave more. Even fewer gave a great amount. All gave what they could (or barely could). In addition, we got many heart-warming e-mails of support, making it clear to us that a great many people have a stake in what we do; want to have a say about it; and are ready to step in to back us up.”

“One supporter, calling from Vancouver, told us, ” You’re like the public library. I may not go there often, but I want it to be there when I need it — like when you did those posters and T-shirts about Hurricane Katrina.” We are amazed and grateful. We take your message to us seriously. What can be more humbling than to know we are so important to so many people?”

Check out the Northland Poster Collective - “the mall of the other America” - here. There are many wonderful things you can acquire there, but perhaps you really want the notecards made by Iraqi artists.
